Our story

Locally owned, and here for the long haul

Santa Cruz Underground and Paving — SCUP for short — has served Santa Cruz County for over 15 years as the area's preferred paving and excavation experts.

We're a locally owned and operated business. If you live in Santa Cruz, you've very likely seen our trucks and employees around the county with the SCUP logo on their shirts and trucks. We have the equipment and the manpower to handle any paving or excavation project — large or small, commercial or residential — from the underground utilities up through the finished pavement.

Because we self-perform excavation, underground, paving, concrete, demolition and hauling, we can carry a project from the first cut of dirt to the final cleanup without handing it off. That continuity is how we keep quality high and timelines tight.

Greg Nohrden

Co-Founder · Underground Expert

Greg is an underground expert with nearly 50 years of experience in the construction industry. He started operating equipment on his family's ranch as a teenager, went on to run a company installing septic tanks, and later owned his own landscape company before co-founding Santa Cruz Underground and Paving in 2005. Greg grew up near Aptos, California and played football at Aptos High School. Friendly, outgoing, trustworthy and a true leader, he's the backbone of everything we do below grade.

Matt Crigger

Owner · Operations & Estimating

Matt has worked in heavy civil construction since 1999 and joined the SCUP team in 2020 after 21 years in project manager and estimator positions. His experience ranges across highway paving, dirt moving, concrete paving, flatwork and structures, mass excavation, structure excavation and backfill, and underground utilities. Matt leads by example and puts the safety of his team before all else.
